pH balance varies from plant to plant but a good figure is around 6 – 6.5. The pH of soil can 
change fairly dramatically from year to year depending on what sort of compost and fertilizers are added.
If your soil is to alkaline or (basic) ((high ph)) you can add things like coffee grounds and tea leaves and rock suffer that are acid forming. If you find your soil is too alkaline you may add wood ash (small amounts only over a few weeks. other thinks like lime or dolomite may also be used.
The wrong pH balance causes stunted growth, nutrient uptake problems, discoloured leaves (usually yellow) plants are likely to suffer from disease. If you think you may have a pH problem its probably worthwhile testing it to rule it out.
If you have used mushroom compost it’s very basic and you will have much success growing many plants. you will need to either mix in a lot of sulphur, coffee grounds or tea leaves to correct the pH balance. We don’t recommend using mushroom compost as it is usually very alkaline.

Wicking beds
We now stock wicking bed boxes, these are a great alternative to high drainage sand. Garden beds require less fill and can hold more water, lasting longer between the hot weeks in the peak of summer.
